National Veld and Forest Fire Act
No. 101 of 1998
Riparian forest forms an integral and important part of the river ecosystem. This vegetation plays a number of important geomorphological, ecological and social roles which maintain the long term functioning and sustainability of the river ecosystem. These roles include stabilization of river channels, banks and floodplains; maintenance of water temperature and quality; and interception of pollutants, nutrients and sediments. Impacts of natural and anthropogenic fires will affect the structure, composition and function of the ecosystem. Veld, forest and mountain fires need to be prevented since they will enhance the floods, erosion and deposition risks. In addition, surface water flowing from the burned areas may carry increased levels of sediment, organic debris, and chemicals that can contribute to degradation of municipal water supplies and aquatic habitats.
